FC2018 Summer Update: Picnic, Charity, Artist Alley, and More!

Hello Furries! We have a lot of exciting announcements for FC2018. Without further ado:

PICNIC

Our FC2018 Picnic is coming up! We’ll be meeting up on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 11am at Fremont Central Park, and will be packing up around 4pm. We’re switching to a slightly new picnic site, Brook 1+2, which is just down the path from our previous years’ site Lions 1+2. We’ll have food, drinks, a fursuit changing tent, music, and lots of furry fun! Head on over to furcon.org/picnic to find out more.

CHARITY

We are thrilled to announce our 2018 Charity: the Silicon Valley Pet Project! In conjunction with their San Jose cat cafe The Dancing Cat, SVPP is committed to finding forever homes for at-risk animals in Bay Area shelters. In 2016 alone, SVPP helped find homes for nearly 60 dogs and 200 cats! Learn more about the work SVPP does on our charity page: furcon.org/charity

ARTIST ALLEY

The Artist Alley is now open for applications! If you are interested in selling in our dealers room in our lottery-selected rotation of artists, please visit furcon.org/alley to find out more! The application window will remain open until Friday, September 23rd.

ART SHOW

After some much-needed TLC on the software side (thanks Binaryfox!), we are ready to open the 2018 Art Show for registration on Saturday, August 26th. Please be sure to review the full rules on furcon.org/artshow, as a few rules have been adjusted for this coming year.

PANELS + PROGRAMMING

Interested in running a panel or other public event at FC? Panel submissions are now open! See furcon.org/events for more. This includes smaller panel-style events, and larger main-stage events–our programming comes from interested attendees like you who want to make things happen!

VOLUNTEERS + SEPTEMBER MEETING

Be a part of FC! Further Confusion is a 100% volunteer-led convention, and we couldn’t make it happen without attendees stepping up to share their time and make it happen. Head on over to furcon.org/volunteer for a list of positions we’re looking for, and for upcoming meeting dates through November. If you’re interested in other ways to help us out, or for positions not listed on the website, email volunteers@furtherconfusion.org or talk to us in person at our open staff meetings or at the picnic on the 24th!

In particular, our next volunteer staff meeting will be on Saturday, September 23, at 1PM, in the San Jose Marriott’s third floor Blossom Hill room. All are welcome for this open staff meeting: Come by, see what’s going on, talk to execs and staff, and find out how to get involved! We will also be livestreaming the meeting for those who would like to find out more but who can’t attend in person; dates and links are available at furcon.org/volunteer.

FC2017 Wrap-Up

Hello travelers! I hope you had a wonderful excursion to Further Confusion 2017, and I would like to offer a big THANK YOU to our attendees, presenters, DJs, vendors, and most of all our volunteer staff for making this an unforgettable convention year.

We are especially proud to share that our convention has filled up all available bookings at our host venues, the San Jose Marriott, the Hilton San Jose, and the Hyatt Place San Jose/Downtown hotel. With a preliminary total of 3,515 registrants, we remain a hotel-block-limited convention, and with the success at the Hyatt Place we are working to expand the block further in this coming year.

I would also like to thank you all for being exemplary guests this year. I am proud to pass along from both FLARE and our hosts at Team San Jose that this has been the best year ever in terms of conduct and behavior, and that this excellent standard has opened new doors for us with future years.

Above all, we would like to thank you for the wonderful work you have done to support Nine Lives Foundation. Between registration donations, our Fancy Friday event, our Charity Auction, auctioned art at the end of FC:U, our Foxes & Peppers 18+ show, our donation cans’ total, and a gift from our parent organization AAE, we are able to pass along over $22,000 in total to this year’s charity. Please stay tuned for a refined total as we count last-minute donations and close this year’s books.

This year has been quite an adventure in the new space, full of new deals, plans, and lessons learned. As with all of our other years, we are very happy to have feedback about FC2017 so we can improve and deliver an even better experience in FC2018. This coming year we are especially looking forward to refining our Art Show and Fursuit Parade, and welcome feedback for specific ways that we can make these offerings better than ever. If you are interested in being a volunteer for Further Confusion 2018, please email info@furtherconfusion.org as we turn over our HR systems for next year.

We expect our Fursuit Parade, photoshoot, and group photos to be posted to dragonscales.net across the next few weeks. We will post to our Twitter account @furcon as soon as they are available. Many thanks to the Dragonscales crew for being our official photographers!

Finally, we are happy to announce details about our 2018 convention year! Our chair Roux is proud to announce our theme for next FC, Furtastic Beasts at Further Confusion. Join us for a magical romp through 1920s America!

FC2017 July Update – Hotel opening, panels, volunteers, & more!

Hello travelers! Please return your seats to the full and upright position and stow your tray tables. Before we take off, we have a few important announcements about Further Confusion 2017:

HOTEL

Firstly, a reminder that our hotel bookings will begin this Sunday, July 10, at 2PM Pacific. We anticipate opening our main hotels, the San Jose Marriott and Hilton San Jose, and will announce and open our overflow hotels later this year.

As in previous years, our hotels have a one night non-refundable deposit due at the time of reservation, which our hotels have historically charged in a batch during the first week of the month after booking. This deposit will not be returned if the reservation is canceled; if you are unable to use a room reservation you’ve made, we recommend transferring the reservation by editing the registrant information or contacting hotel@furtherconfusion.org. We have a forum set up for rooms and rides to Further Confusion here at http://discourse.furtherconfusion.org/.

DEALER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our Business team has reviewed all of our Dealer’s Den applications, and have sent out notification emails to all who have applied. Dealers please check your email (including Promotions and Spam folders if necessary) to see your status, or email dealers@furtherconfusion.org to inquire. Via separate email you should also have received an updated Dealer’s hotel booking link, which is currently active; if you are unable to book using the updated hotel link, please email us.

We will not be hosting a “Marketplace” space this year, but will have an application in the fall for lottery-selected one-day tables (“Artist Alley”) in the Dealer’s Room. For more information, or to join our mailing list for notifications, please see the Dealer page.

PANELS

Interested in hosting a panel? Have an idea for a new panel, or want to see a previous panel return? Our panel submission form is up and ready! We’ll be accepting panel submissions through the rest of the summer, and will close submissions to build our schedule in the fall (date TBD).

If you are interested in helping us out by being a track lead, or have an idea for a big event (including on main stage), you can also let us know by emailing programming@furtherconfusion.org.

CHARITY NOMINATIONS

FC is more than just a meet-up or party; we exist to support local charitable causes, and we need your help choosing an organization for 2017. We are currently accepting charity nominations through this form. Please read the guidelines there; we will be accepting nominations through the end of July.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS

We want you! If you have talked to us already about volunteering, or know which role you’d like to return to, please head over to our Volunteer page to apply. Upon hiring you will be added to our mailing lists, get access to the staff hotel block, and more. For FC2017, volunteers receive free attendee registration and discounted sponsor/super-sponsor registration in addition to a staff gift and other benefits, so whether you’re new or returning staff it’s a great time to give back to your community and help us put on FC.

NEXT STAFF MEETING

Our next open FC Staff Meeting will be at the San Jose Marriott on Saturday July 16 at 1PM, in the third floor Blossom Hill room. Attending a meeting is a great way to find out more about how FC works, to meet staff, and to learn about ways to get involved. Come by and see us!

Pre-registration and Dealer’s Room applications are now open!

Head over to our registration page and dealers’ page to see our rules and get started. Pre-registration will be open through the end of the year with discounted attendee pricing, but our Dealer’s applications will only be open through Sunday night June 26 at 11:59PM.

Fresh from the FC News Wire, a few updates for you!

  • Further Confusion is proud to co-present Eric Risher’s short film “Furries” (among other short films) at Frameline Film Festival’s Only in SF show tomorrow, June 20! Tickets are still available here: https://ticketing.frameline.org/festival/film/detail.aspx?id=3906&FID=53
  • We will be opening our Dealer’s Room applications from Wednesday, June 22 until Sunday, June 26. Stay tuned for details!
  • Also on Wednesday, June 22, as previously announced, we will be opening our general pre-registration! Pre-registration tickets will be $60 (our at-the-door price is $70), with sponsor tickets at $140 and super-sponsor tickets at $280.
  • Finally, our first staff meeting will take place at Gardner Community Center in San Jose this Saturday, June 25, at 1PM! The full address is Gardner Hall, 520 W Virginia St, San Jose, CA 95125. Dealer’s Den Rules Posted

We’ve posted our draft Dealer’s Den rules on our Dealer’s Rules page! Please read on there for new information about space, prices, load-in and load-out, our new Artist’s Alley, and other details.

In the interest of getting a clear and agreeable set of rules before they have been finalized, we are soliciting constructive feedback and comments; as such, the rules will be evolving through Sunday, June 19. If you have questions or feedback about our rules, please email us at dealers@furcon.org, post to our forum thread, or (if it fits) tweet at us at @furcon and we’ll fix up the rules as best we can.

FC2017 Announcement

Hello everyone!

Thank you for your patience as we’ve been sorting out the new year. We have had a lot to revise and now have a lot to announce!

First and foremost we can now confirm our January announcement that Further Confusion will be returning on January 12-16, 2017 in the San Jose Convention Center expansion space as well as the San Jose Marriott and Hilton. We believe that this new space will provide much-needed room to grow, including our social space, programming space, and commercial space to help us provide a top-notch experience for all of our guests.

We do expect a number of changes this year, as the new space allows or requires; this includes a Thursday night “Arrivals Lounge” and Dance in the Marriott, as well as a rerouting or format change for Saturday afternoon’s fursuit parade. We’ll have more to announce across the next few months!

Dealers Den and Artist Alley

Pending confirmation with the fire marshal, our current layout will allow our Dealer’s Room table count to grow by 20-30% (to ~120 from ~98), with the possibility of additional tables to be determined. In lieu of the Marketplace, we are introducing an additional 12 Artist Alley seats per sales day (36 total) selected via lottery, with the possibility of more based on interest. Finally, we have designed the room to accommodate a limited number of 10’x10’ booth setups.

Our dealers application window will open on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 and will close on Sunday, June 26. As with previous years, application date and time will not be a selection factor, to allow for all of our dealers to fit the application into their busy schedules; selection will take place the following week, and approved dealers will be given a brief “early-access” hotel registration opportunity. We will be announcing our revisions to FC2016’s juried dealer selection process, as well as FC2017’s new policies (prices, union-friendly load-in, and electrical considerations) in the next few days for public comment and revision.

Artist Alley applications will be open in the fall, and will be tentatively chosen by lottery in November. As we do for Dealers, we will require a California temporary seller’s permit on file by convention time for all of our selected Artist Alley vendors.

Registration

Registration will also open on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Our final prices will be $60 for Pre-Reg Attending memberships ($70 at the door), $140 for Sponsor memberships, and $280 for Super-Sponsor memberships. We have also revised our staff rates to better recognize our many volunteers; staff, please see below.

Hotel

After fully booking our room block for FC2016, we have increased our room block for FC2017, and will open for hotel bookings through Passkey on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 2PM Pacific Time. We will again be hosting some of our events in the Hilton and Marriott, and are finalizing negotiations to offer rooms at the Fairmont. We have inquired about room blocks within the Westin St. Claire and Ramada, and will announce their opening if and when they become available.

Staff

Our first staff meeting of the year will be at Gardner Community Center in San Jose on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 1PM. With our new registration structure, we have made room to recognize our staff members with fully-comped (free) attendee registration, and $70-discounted registration upgrades ($70 sponsor, $210 super-sponsor). We are extremely grateful to our volunteers and hope that this better reflects our appreciation toward those who give their time behind the scenes to make FC happen!

Other Dates

  • Our panel submissions will be open starting in the next couple of weeks and will be open until early fall.
  • DJ applications will be open in the late summer.
  • Dance Competition auditions will be open in the fall.
  • Art Show registration dates are TBD (likely mid-summer).
  • Lingering requests for conbooks, pocket programs, and gear will be sent out shortly. (Thank you for your patience; some of our FC2017 prep took more time than expected!)

FC2016 Wrap Up!

Hello everyone! Thanks for a fantastic FC2016. A few details for you as we wrap up the year.

  • Our final attendance number: 3,454 attendees (update: 3,536 attendees). Our final parade number: 760 fursuiters.
  • We are still awaiting news from the hotel about our Clean Room Contest winners. Stay tuned!
  • Update 2/3/2016: Our dance competition video and photoshoot/parade photos are online! Our videographers are currently editing our photos and FCTV footage. We expect to have them posted across the next few weeks. Thank you again to Kyreeth and Dragonscales Photography for taking, posting, and hosting our photoshoot photos!
  • Did you miss out on picking up your sponsor swag, super-sponsor swag, t-shirt, conbook, pocket program, or diner mat? Please fill out this form and we’ll get them to you as soon as we can!
  • As announced, we are in final negotiations to move to the SJCC expansion next year (the new building between the Marriott and Hilton). Exciting details to come!
  • If you have feedback about our convention, please send it to feedback@furtherconfusion.org. We’d love to hear how to make FC better!
